COLLABORATION WITH THE NATIONAL THEATRE AND THE SCENE FOR A UNIQUE MUSICAL PRODUCTION

The visionary plan for the 70,000 sqm. plot, owned half by Steen & Strøm and half by Storebrand, is to develop a multifunctional urban city center with a high proportion of dwellings and a diverse range of retail, business, culture, activities, and experiences. As a matter of fact, Økern has already been characterized as an area with activities, culture, and entertainment.

Økern with its history and location in the center of Oslo, was perfect for a total experience when the National Theatre of Norway (Nationaltheatret) performed “The death at Oslo Central Station”- a musical tribute to those on the outside, to the unpolished underground - and to love, during Spring 2023.

National Theatre’s major production in 2023 took place at Økern! Axel Hellstenius transformed the film script from the cult movie ‘Death at Oslo Central Station’ – based on Ingvar Ambjørnsen’s novel – into a musical, in close collaboration with the recently departed Pogo Pops vocalist Frank Hammersland, who composed the music for the production. The former shopping center was converted into a theater and stage in one, immersing the audience in the unfolding narrative. A magical experience, says Thomas Holth, Development Director, Steen & Strøm.

Close to 26,000 visitors attended the overall 67 performances and the play received the 2023 Hedda Award in the category “Best theatre production in Norway”.
